A report from the BBC states that the bottled water market is booming, with estimated sales to reach £266 billion this year, and continued growth globally – peaking at approximately £350 billion by 2029.
That’s a lot of money by anyone’s standards! Just think what you could buy with that. You could purchase Manchester United and still have some loose change… the Glazers are after a mere £5 billion.
Bigger costs
But, it’s not all about the money. There is an environmental impact to consider. Only 2.3% of the bottled water market uses glass bottles. Plastic bottles make up the remainder – but even recycled PET plastic bottles have a huge impact on the environment.
A white paper – Energy implications of bottled water concludes “…we estimate that producing bottled water requires between 5.6 and 10.2 MJ l−1—as much as 2000 times the energy cost of producing tap water. Given an annual consumption of 33 billion litres of bottled water in the US, we estimate that the annual consumption of bottled water in the US in 2007 required an energy input equivalent to between 32 and 54 million barrels of oil or a third of a per cent of total US primary energy consumption. We estimate that roughly three times this amount was required to satisfy global bottled water demand.”
These energy assumptions were based on US 2007 figures. So, if you factor in the graph below[1] and the estimated global market growth values above, you are probably starting to understand the title of this blog – Why bother with plastic bottles?

Tap up your tap!
Yes, bottled water is convenient, but come on, really? How hard is it to use a refillable, reusable bottle from your tap at home?
We offer our customers great drinking water systems. Drinking water systems that will improve the quality of the water you drink and look elegant in your home.
There is no such thing as pure water. Especially when it comes to drinking water supplied into our homes straight from the tap. Limescale, chlorine, lead, sediment and bacteria are just some of the things that can make their way into our drinking water supply.
Funny tastes and odours? These can be signs of impurities. Many contaminants can only be detected through proper testing. That’s why it’s important to choose a drinking water system that is right for you and your family.
All of our water systems and filters use replacement water filter cartridges. This saves you time, and money, as well as reducing your impact on the environment.
So, don’t bottle up your feelings about plastic water bottles – change your habits.
Call in to our showroom to see, and taste, the difference a drinking water system can make.
