Benefits of Buying Locally

Should you shop local for your next water softener, or click “buy now” on a faceless website? At W.E. Softeners we are biased, of course, but the case for shop local water softener buying goes well beyond convenience. Local matters for advice, for installation, for aftercare, and for the local economy you live in.

The “shop local” idea is not new. Indeed, the British Independent Retail Association has championed it since 1899. Today, government campaigns and dedicated days like Small Business Saturday keep the message alive on the first Saturday in December.

Why shop local for a water softener

A water softener is not like buying a kettle. The right model depends on your water hardness, your mains pressure and the layout of your kitchen. A local supplier walks into your home, tests your water and gives you a tailored recommendation. A website cannot do any of that.

Just as importantly, when something needs servicing in five years’ time, the same local family will still pick up the phone. That is a guarantee no online checkout can match.

Safe shopping you can see

In a post-COVID world, local shops have made customers feel physically safe. More importantly, they offer something deeper: emotional safety. Customers see staff and owners face to face, not hidden behind a website or social media profile.

Online buying carries real risks. Customers get ripped off, scams happen, and unreliable sellers vanish overnight. By contrast, real local businesses cannot afford to misrepresent their products. Their reputation is their livelihood.

There is something to be said for looking the seller in the eye. Researchers have studied this directly. A collaborative study by Professor Michael Platt found that buying decisions show up in eye movements and pupil dilation. None of that translates to a screen.

Money spent local stays local

Have you seen this photo?

The point is true and it matters. In our case, that money has paid for Ollie’s driving lessons and helped Amy support her kids through university. More widely, money spent locally pays staff wages, supports other local suppliers (IT, marketing, accountants) and funds the village pre-school.

Even your spending in local shops and pubs supports the same network. We all play a part in keeping the local community alive.

Local jobs and community

Buying local also keeps local businesses growing. As a result, they create new jobs and take on local employees. We were thrilled when Ben joined us from the village we operate from. It really did feel like keeping things in the family.

Local businesses also pay rates to local councils. Consequently, they generate revenue that boosts spending on libraries, parks and road repairs. Every shop local water softener purchase you make adds a small contribution to that pot.

Cut your carbon footprint

Buying local also cuts carbon miles. If you order water softener salt online, do you know where it actually comes from? How many miles did it travel to reach you? And how many miles did it travel to your supplier’s warehouse first?

Our click and collect and local delivery service keeps your carbon miles down, along with your costs. In fact, our salt prices are highly competitive, and the quality is second to none.

A better customer experience

We know our customers. We get to know them over years of service. We are on first name terms with most people and recognise faces on sight. Can an online transaction match any of that?

Will an online chatbot ask after your children or your parents? Will a faceless call centre do a charity walk for a fellow tradesman in the area? Of course not. We do, though, and we plan to keep building those relationships locally.
